Aven’s Alfa Bank in Russia was long a close partner with Putin’s Parex Bank in Latvia, for example using Parex as a correspondent bank. Alfa made an offer to purchase Parex in 2007 before the Parex oligarchs decided to loot it instead and give the liabilities to Latvian taxpayers.
Aven’s close associate Yuri Shefler (Stolichnaya Vodka) was one of the people receiving fraudulent loans from Parex during the looting process.
